MINDSAY ADS

 AND HOW TO REMOVE THEM

Re: MisterOrange and his recent entry concerning Mindsay Ads.

Below is a snapshot of the Mindsay Top-Blog page. Notice there are no visible ads.

If you're interest how you too can remove nearly all ads from most webpages read on, I'll explain how to do it. (It's not difficult!)

How to remove Google Adsense and most ads from webpages, including Mindsay blog:

FOR IE6 ONLY

1. Navigate to the location below

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

2. Look for the file called "hosts"

3. Open the file with notepad, it is a text file.

4. If you copy and paste everything you see below (between the dotted-lines) into your hosts file, you will no longer see most ads on visited webpages. (You will be pasting it below whatever already exists in your hosts file.)

If you're using IE7 Pro there is a feature for "ad-blocking"

If you're using Firefox, you can "right-click" on some ads to prohibit their images from loading. There is also a robust ad-blocking plug-in available HERE.

THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT!

NOTE: All Google AdSense ads will disappear, thus eliminating the potential revenue stream of the site you are visiting. Also, some ads are very persistent and move difficult to block. This works for 90% of ads, but maybe not the "American Apparel" ads.

Ads - Good or Bad? Is Mindsay Free?

If you own a car you're advertising every time you drive.

If you post a YouTube video you're advertising YouTube.

If you chat on Meebo you're advertising Meebo.

If you own an ipod do you scratch off the name?

If you wear a Northface garment do you remove the logo?

Mindsay... it is a business people, not a game or a toy for it's owners. And Mindsay is no different than any other site in that earned ad revenue is important to their bottom-line. Don't you appreciate how the site has improved over the years? Isn't it a great thing that Adam Ostrow is available for direct communication? Would it really be so bothersome to click on an ad once in a while to send a few ducats his way?

I don't relish ads either. The most bothersome are the ones which play music on mouseover. It's almost always music I don't want to hear. So I hit the mute button, no big deal.

If the content of an ad offends or annoys you what should you do?

You could ignore it, I often do, or you could spend five minutes in IE, Firefox or Opera and learn how to block ads. But just remember this if you do block ads... you are signaling your unwillingness to support this Mindsay you enjoy so much for free. Come on, if everybody here clicked on an ad just once a week maybe Adam and Company could afford better beer!
