When you listen to the mp3 file above do you hear anything different. Does it sound ok to you. I can almost guarantee it does. Would you be surprised to know that that mp3 is one-eighth the size of any three-minute mp3 you listen to. Come on now, did you really hear any sound-quality difference? Why?
Most people listen to mp3's either through their computer-speakers or straight into their ears from an mp3 player. Listening to mp3's that way, your ears cannot hear the difference between a conventionally sized file and a down-sized one.
Do you think the manufacturers of i-pod, Zen or any other mp3 play are going to tell you this? Why should they. They would rather sell you a new, higher-capacity player for $300.
Let me give you the example of what I have done:
I have a 40 gigabyte mp3 player. If I loaded it to capacity with mp3 of conventional file size the summary would be as below:
31 days, 1 hours, 39 minutes, 14 seconds
(44739 minutes total)
994 albums (at an estimated 45 minutes per album)
But that's not what I did. What I did was convert all my files so that my summary is...
248 days, 13 hours, 13 minutes, 56 seconds
(357913 minutes total)
7953 albums (at an estimated 45 minutes per album)
That's eight months of constant music! It's hard to believe I know, but it's true. And the same example applies to hard-drive storage as well regarding both sound and video files. You can go HERE and calculate your own storage.
